Burton Albion have strengthened their attacking options with the deadline-day signing of winger Raphael Borges Rodrigues on a season-long loan from Coventry City. The 22-year-old Dutch-born Australia under-23 international joins the Brewers for the 2026/27 campaign.
Gary Bowyer's side, currently sitting 4th in League One with seven points from four games, have moved to add depth out wide. They are three points behind leaders Huddersfield Town and have scored eight goals while conceding five so far this season. This signing comes just ahead of their next fixture, a home match against Cambridge United on September 5th.
Raphael Borges Rodrigues is a 22-year-old wide player who can operate on either flank. He featured for Coventry City throughout their pre-season preparations but did not make any of Frank Lampard's matchday squads for competitive fixtures this term. In total, he has made eight appearances for Coventry in all competitions. His last outing for the Sky Blues was in August 2025, when he came off the bench to provide an assist in a 7-1 victory over Queens Park Rangers.
The majority of his 2025/26 campaign was spent on loan at fellow League One side Wigan Athletic. During that spell, he made 37 appearances, scoring one goal and registering three assists. His experience in the division is seen as a valuable asset for Burton's push up the standings.
Burton Albion head coach Gary Bowyer welcomed the new arrival with clear enthusiasm for his attributes. "It’s great to be able to bring Raphael into the building, we must thank Coventry City for allowing us to do so," Bowyer said. He specifically highlighted the player's direct style and adaptability. "He is a fast and direct wide player, capable of playing on either flank, so he brings versatility to the group."
This versatility could prove important as Burton look to maintain their positive early-season form, which reads WLWD from their opening four matches. The manager's comments suggest Borges Rodrigues will be in contention for immediate involvement, potentially as soon as the Cambridge United game listed on the club's fixtures page.
The signing addresses a clear need for pace and width in Burton Albion's attacking unit. With the team showing a positive goal difference early on, adding another creative outlet aims to sustain that momentum. Borges Rodrigues joins a squad that Bowyer will hope can close the gap to the league leaders.
His ability to play on both the left and right wing gives the manager tactical flexibility. It allows for rotation and different strategic approaches depending on the opponent. Fans will be eager to see how he integrates with the existing players in the squad.
For the player, this move represents a chance for regular first-team football after being on the periphery at Coventry this season. A successful loan spell in League One could reignite his career at his parent club or put him in the shop window. For Burton, it's a low-risk acquisition that bolsters their options without a long-term financial commitment.
The deal was completed on transfer deadline day. The loan is for the full duration of the 2026/27 campaign, giving the winger a full season to make his mark at the Pirelli Stadium. His first opportunity could come at home against 6th-placed Cambridge United this Friday.
