Burton's EFL Cup campaign took a hit as Blackburn mounted a stunning comeback to beat the League One side 2-1. The visitors trailed for large parts after 18-year-old Zac Scutt opened the scoring after 14 minutes. Blackburn goalkeeper Balazs Toth had to make an early double save as Albion made a fast start, but Todd Cantwell and Yuki Ohashi both spurned good early chances to put the Championship side ahead.
What happened?
Burton made Blackburn pay when Scutt slotted home from close range after Kyran Lofthouse's shot had been saved by Toth. Albion keeper Corey Addai came to his side's rescue, saving from Cantwell after an error from defender Finn Delap and the keeper also saved from Ohashi just before the break. Burton almost doubled their lead early in the second half, with Kegs Chauke's cross evading Matty Dennis but Lofthouse seeing his far post effort cleared off the line.
Why it matters for Burton
Blackburn finally equalised with nine minutes to go when Gudjohnsen headed home Cantwell's cross from point blank range. And Fevrier saw Blackburn through on Tony Mowbray's return to the Rovers dugout, curling home from the edge of the box with two minutes to go. The result leaves Burton 49 points behind leaders Lincoln in the title race and with a tough fixture list ahead, including a trip to Leicester next week.
What comes next?
League standing (final 2025 table -- new season not yet under way): 17th in League One, 54 pts, 13W-15D-18L from 46 games, recent form DDDWD. Goals this season: 50 scored, 60 conceded (-10 goal difference). The team will look to bounce back from this defeat and get back to winning ways, but for now, they will have to settle for a disappointing result in the EFL Cup.
